Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2013 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2013-14 Preview (ACC) Wake Forest

What is Wake Forest Football? For decades they were an also ran program in the ACC. They fought hard but usually came up short and then in 2006 they won 11 games, including a shutout at Florida State, and played in the Orange Bowl.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (Team Link)
Coach: Jim Grobe
2012 Record: 5-7
Odds of winning BCS Championship: +2000 (Field)

Since then it has been a steady decline to eventually sub .500 records the last 4 seasons.

Coach Jim Grobe’s job is not in any jeopardy but recent performance has to make you wonder if they can ever be a real threat in the conference again.

This year they have a chance to best last year’s 5 wins and maybe get bowl eligible with a senior laden roster The key will be taking care of business at home and maintaining the strong record they have against other teams from within the state of North Carolina of late (15-5 since 2005).

They have an experienced team this year so it could be time for another peak, just not nearly as as high.

Wake Forest is yet another ACC team with a senior quarterback in Tanner Price, though this one may not be building towards something special. Last year he had a real struggle of a season, throwing for significantly less yards and TDs than he did as a sophomore which was a surprise.

There are going to be 7 senior starters on this offense who have not experienced all that much success in Winston-Salem. Sometimes that last kick at the can inspires a little extra performance…if the talent is there in the first place.

The jury is still out on Price.

One guy who has shown talent in the past is fellow senior, running back Josh Harris. Like Price he is trying to get back to previous glory as he has not exceeded the 700+ yards he rushed for as a freshman in either of the last two seasons. Injuries have played a part but he is running out of time, literally…ditto for senior receiver Michael Capanaro.

The Demon Deacons offense was the worst in the league last season scoring just 18.5 points per game. making it surprising that they actually won as much as they did. If Price, Harris and Campanaro get closer to or exceed personal bests Wake will be the surprise of the league again.

Defensively the Demon Deacons were not much better, ranking second to last in the conference by giving up 31ppg. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

This side of the ball also returns a wealth of experience as measured by 8 returning starters and 9 starters projected as being upperclassmen. The question is whether that experience will make any difference for a team that has looked step slow on D. Wake does have a couple of players in LB Justin Jackson and NG Nikita Whitlock though.

Whitlock is especially fun to watch as he is often outweighed by 50 or more pounds at the point of attack but still breaks through to make plays. He is a classic underdog.

2013-14 Record Projection: 5-7

There is one thing we know for sure and it is that the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are going to be one of the most experienced teams in the FBS this season.

However, what is all that experience worth if it is from players who are are searching for past glory or maybe never had any in the first place. All that experience doesn’t make the Demon Deacons anywhere close to as talented as Clemson or Florida State or Miami…and all of Wake’s road games look like losses.

As a result the ceiling may not be high in terms of win totals but if this team actually does parlay all their blood, sweat and tears into performance it could be a monster against the spread, which is partly influenced by actual wins and losses.

The Demon Deacons are likely to have a lot of the latter so look closely at this team in the second half when I think there desperation could make them dangerous and keep them closer in games against FSU and Vanderbilt than you would expect a losing team to be.

An extra win might even get them a bowl game invite.
